STEPS:
Collect the materials below & set up beforehand.
Cover the table completely with paper or newspaper (tape down).
Tape child's paper to the table.
Fill medicine cups with a very small amount of water.
Help your child squeeze 2 drops of food coloring into each cup and mix with a straw.
ASK THEM: "What are straws usually for?" TELL THEM: "We are doing something DIFFERENT with them today. We are blowing air OUT to make art, not sucking it in. Can we practice?"
Practice blowing just air OUT of the straw to make sure your child is able to safely blow paint.
Grown-ups - use a pipette or just pour a dot/blob of dye in 4 separate spots on the paper. (To ease frustration for young children, place dots in closer proximity. For older children, move dots farther apart.)
ASK THEM: "Can you put your straw close to the color? Can you CONNECT THE DOTS by blowing through your straw?"
(My 4 yr old invented her own technique -dip the straws into the paint spots directly to help move the color around!)
10. WATCH and PRAISE them for persevering,"bringing your colors together" and "blowing your painting to life!"
TIPS:
Siblings can help each other or work together!
Try DIFFERENT SIZES AND KINDS OF STRAWS - reusable hard ones, disposable, long, and short for success!
